i have played golf about three times a year since i was really little, i have my own clubs and bag, i’m just very, very mediocre. I’m going to start taking lessons very soon, my family are all golfers, i really want to make the team and am prepared to work hard any tips or techniques to keep my focus and how often should i play/hit at the driving range/practice chipping and putting? i’m pretty terrible but i understand the mechanics.

Your best shot at making the team is by showing the coach potential. If you show your love for the game, and your commitment to improving yourself you should be fine. From my experience, coaches prefer a lesser skilled player with a positive team spirit, over a better player who is cocky and only cares about himself. Oh and don’t go around throwing clubs if you hit a bad shot, be well tempered, mature, and respect the game.

Good luck!

My technique is horrible! How do you properly hold it? Release it?

Thanks for the help!

I assume you are using a backhand, since most people use backhand for driving.

The first thing to check is the grip. Your 4 fingers should all be curled around grasping the rim, the forefinger should not be on the outside.

Second, a good backhand is not thrown with the arm, the power comes from the legs. Your arm should be straight and loose, do not start by bending your elbow. Your body is like a whip, with your arm as the lash. It should be loose so the power from the legs and back can flow through it.

If you have played badminton, a power backhand is exactly like hitting a low return on your backhand side. (for a right hander) your right leg steps towards 10:00, so your back is facing the direction you are throwing. Your backbone winds up like a spring as your hips rotate around to face the front while your shoulders remain facing back, and then your back releases and the shoulders whip around, dragging the arm with them. This is where the power is magnified – but only if the arm is 100% loose, so the power can flow through it.

There is a good description on the upa.org website, though I don’t know the URL offhand.

I am a 26 year old man who works out heavily, every day. Yet, I can only drive about 225-250 feet. What can I do to improve my distance? Please include tips on grip and technique. I am getting a bit frustrated. I am throwing a Valkyrie and Wraith with little success.

The best way to get a professional calibre drive is to learn from a pro. At least seeing a top competitor will give you ideas you can mimic or assimilate for your own. If you don’t know any pros in your area, get online and buy a recent dvd. You’ll catch alot of different shots and ideas! Without video of your drive, fixing it will be virtually impossible. Disc golf comes from you and you alone. Go grasshopper, learn and huck.

I’ve got some pretty important regional golf finals tomorrow and any help for dealing with first tee nerves would help me no end,
they don’t have to be related to golf/other sports.
Thankyou

Breathe deeply and slowly in through the nose and out through the mouth. Don’t overdo it so that you don’t hyperventilate. 4 or 5 good deep breaths while you are waiting for the tee should do then one or two while setting up your shot and one more at address.
Concentrate on the breathing. Notice everything you can about it. If you’re thinking about the breathing you won’t be thinking about all the stuff going on around you. Stand behind your ball and form a picture in your mind of the shot you intend to make. . Picture the ball flight and picture the ball landing.
Approach the teed up ball, go through your routine and remember to swing smoothly.
My karate instructor told me to take a deep breath before striking a blow and to explode my breath out when I was delivering a blow. Use that technique during your swing.

I have a problem with my driving technique. The ball always curves to the right, especially when I’m getting tired. Also, I keep getting blisters on both of my thumbs. What do you think is my mistake?

Loosen up your hands, you’ll get more initial velocity (distance) if you release the death grip you got going. here’s what my pro teacher told me in his own words on why a extremely tight grip won’t give you more distance and a larger slice:

Speed is determined by CLUB HEAD SPEED, not the amount of force you put into your swing. You attain more speed by "whipping" the shaft rather than just trying to swing as hard as you can.

If that only fixes a bit of the slice, i would suggest in your practice routine before each shot, try to swing your club with your feet together and get a feel of what it feels like to turn over. Then swing again with your right foot back, then finally with your normal stance. Just remember to drop into the slot and turn over.

Oh and yeah no more death grip :)

I have never played golf before and I am interested in getting started. I don’t own a set of golf clubs and I have never set foot on a golf course. Where can I go to be taught techniques and practise my skills?
Does anyone have any suggested names of locations of golf courses close by that teach new comers to golf?

Call or go to a golf course. They have people who will provide instruction.

Golf provides a lot of exercise and you get outside. ENJOY !

Golf Clubs?

Posted by admin

For the first time in my life, i will be going golfing with a group of friends of mine. However, i have no idea how to golf. So, my question is mainly, what clubs do i have to bring when i go golfing, and please explain what a wood or an iron is… also, any good golfing techniques would really help. Thanks soo much

I remember my very first round of golf…..I hit a sprinkler head on the first tee and watched as the ball went backwards over my head and hit some cars in the parking lot.
Main thing is don’t use a baseball swing. Golf swing is totally different. Keep right arm straight (if you’re right handed) and only do a half swing. Don’t try to kill it. Your club should swing in the direction you want your ball to go. Follow through all the way.
If you get in a sand bunker, take the flattest club, the sand wedge, and hit the sand about an inch or two behind the ball. Don’t stop the swing but swing all the way through, picking up sand and ball , follow through all the way. Ball will fly up and softly land on the green or fairway, where ever it is located.

Putting….mark your ball…don’t walk between other players ball marks and the hole…furthest one out goes first. watch their balls to get a read on which way the greens go. you can learn a lot from that. line up the ball and try to see which way you think the ball will run….. again follow through but don’t hit so hard the roll rolls right by the hole and goes for twenty yards pass the edge of the green.

Accuracy is much better than distance…..distance you can learn later….just take your time, swing slowly, let the club do the work and always follow through….
other than that, enjoy yourself and let me know how you did…

to break the ice, here’s a few jokes…
when asked what my handicap is…I reply, "Every club in the bag."

If asked what I shoot…I reply, I always shoot in the 70’s….if it gets any hotter, I stay in the clubhouse…..
